BUILDING A LOG SPIRAL STAIRCASE FOR OUR ALASKA LOG CABIN

log spiral support

APRIL 24, 2005
Well the cabin made it through the winter. Time to start getting ready for company this summer. This page is dedicated to the building process of our stairs. It took two tries to get them the way we wanted, but practice makes perfect.
The spiral stair log anchor helps support the loft, which carries weight also from our two purlins.

Log stair treads

Pounding our stair treads in. Most of the log treads are from the larger logs we cut out of the window openings. They are super level, ha. We have a ways to go.

Kodi is at home here. He spends his time outside chasing rabbits.

Log cabin window covers

We made window covers to keep our giant glass panels protected when we aren't here. We don't need to find a bear in our cabin. We have a system in mind for these window covers to make them more usable.
We finally have a screen door.

log stairs with railing

The hanging spiral staircase isn't so dog friendly yet. It's more of a gnome staircase, but I love it. It works perfectly in this small space.
Our first attempt at railing was a little spindly and not very cool looking.

One of my favorite spots...the outhouse. We have fancy walls now (on the outside), still don't have a door, but we have a window now that looks out to the mountains. The toilet is pretty comfortable that we carved out of log.

cabin_windowcovers

Our super awesome window cover system. We have ropes tied to the tops of these, while they are bolted at the bottom. We can pull them up snug and fasten them inside, or let them down and they rest on a log beam. It makes working on the front logs much easier, and it is a little like our own deck.
No bear is getting in these windows, I hope.

Kodi spends his time wherever we are usually, but when he's outside he watches carefully for bunnies or moose. There are so many bunnies around here! He knows how to push the screen open now to get in, and enjoys being able to get out of the mosquitos this year.

Giant malamute test run

This railing is really pathetic. It took us a bit to realize that, but we have plans to fix it up. It works for now to get Kodi up....getting down is a whole different thing though. He's 120 lbs and not easy to move around. He did well though, and before long was flying up and down them.

Cabin life is slow and peaceful. I love how simple it is to live when we get away from all the busyness of the world. We cook with our propane stove and grill, use oil lamps for light in the darker seasons, haul in water, and have no internet connections here. It is so good for us.

loft log railing 1

Log railings going up in the loft. We used logs that we harvest north of the cabin. We went out on lots of "burl" walks to come up with some decorative railing pieces.
We are also changing our stair railing to be much sturdier.

Detail work in the loft included making this little door for safety and it's a perfect hangout for Kodi.

Finished Log spiral staircase with railing! This turned out great. It's very usable other than we have to duck to get under the loft log. It will be perfect for kids someday!
